You have reached the inbox of the former Grand Admiral Thrawn of the Imperial Star Destroyer Chimaera and the Seventh Fleet, also formerly known as Senior Commander Mitth'raw'nuruodo of the Springhawk.
I will return your message promptly.

I was hoping you would share your data on the death toll? I have some interesting data I collected from the Enclosure I'd like to compare it to.
Re: Audio
[he says it smoothly, but the entire address is a little heavy-handed: Thrawn likely is waiting for permission to shorten the name but is unsure what would be most appropriate for Justine's culture]
Perhaps a collaboration is in order. You may call me Thrawn; I believe that my title effectively ended with my death.
Re: Audio
Now, I would be very interested in a collaboration.
I did a series of very crude experiments in the Enclosure to test the theory that one cannot die there and the results were very enlightening.
Re: Audio
Your experiments consisted of attempted harm towards yourself, another person, or both?
Re: Audio
Besides, I was able to get the results I needed without unnecessary interference. Unfortunately, I was only brought to the brink of death before summoning intervention.
I was very silly and did not have a way to preserve my notes, should I die and they disappear within the Enclosure.
Re: Audio
Re: Audio
And the King intervened. He calls himself John Doe here.
Re: Audio
I see. And when he was called to intervene, did he shut off the Enclosure or did he pull you from it?
Re: Audio
Re: Audio
What was his reaction? Negative, I imagine, but did he express concern for you or himself, or anger?
Re: Audio
I'm unwilling to answer anything else on him, however, unless you can adequately link it to this work.
Re: Audio
But you are correct; that has no bearing on this conversation.
By what weapon or method did you injure yourself? And how did you come to be in the Enclosure? It was my understanding that it could not generate weapons that would leave lasting damage.
Cw: just...so much self harm mentions
That was how I knew to ask you.
Well, I had a knife of my own I brought in, as well as a means to create fire. I also was curious and bit into my flesh to see if I could bite deeper than an Enclosure creature.
Re: Cw: just...so much self harm mentions
And you discovered that weapons brought into the Enclosure could be used to harm, but weapons summoned inside the Enclosure would likely lead to disabling of the program. Is that accurate?
no subject
When I used the knife I brought in, that's when I suspect I punctured a lung and began to bleed.
Fire created and sustained by Enclosure materials only burned the skin, but fire created and maintained by my own materials went very deep. Interestingly, fire created by me but maintained by Enclosure materials still behaved as Enclosure-made.
The creature that bit only punctured the skin but did not tear. I could tear my flesh.
And, of course, any Enclosure created space would not harm. Long falls and spikes, and closing walls.
It would warp reality, but it would not change the setting or revert to its original space.

Now, tell me of your experience with the Death Toll.
no subject
The basic summary of the death toll is that it is a stasis holder: no rot or rigor mortis sets in, no decay or otherwise organic depletion occurs, indicating that cell death is nonexistent- the Admiral simply halts the process, or the ship’s mechanics do, until such time as the warden responsible can call for a resurrection. I believe this may be for a few reasons: to get the body somewhere safe to prevent shock once they revive, to prevent multiple attacks on the same person, and to secure the area.
The death toll “timer” begins at approximately the moment the resurrection occurs and continues for the next seven standard days, the pain and soreness diminishing gradually over time. The pain of the site is primarily focused on the point or points of injury but overall there is a general ache as one’s body knits itself back together. Traditional medicine may ease the pain but I suspect the general weakness and fatigue are not symptoms that can be fixed apart from rest and potentially muscle relaxers.
I may ask if Doctor Hilbert keeps bacta on inventory, as that would circumvent your need for stitches.
no subject
What is bacta?
no subject
A bacterial mixture that when appropriately used, will heal wounds, burns, abrasions, nerve damage, hyper and hypothermia, and a myriad of other afflictions. It cannot regrow limbs but it can assist with arthritic conditions and restore feeling and movement in previously limited extremities.
As a matter of standard care, it’s prohibitively expensive, reserved for those with money, status, or severe conditions, but I imagine cost is no object here.
no subject
I would like to know if all death is the same.
no subject
[Imagine not having to wait around for your cuts to heal like some pleb, Justine!]
To what end?

no subject
I can tell you that morally, I struck first and expected a blow in return, which I was dealt. The matter is now settled between us and we will be at tentative peace. I was, in truth, more disappointed in those wardens who commented on Astarion's post about how they were obligated by their station not to congratulate him, which of course is a commendation all on its own. But it was good to know who not to offer trust in the future.
As to the first, I cannot help you. Even among my own people, I'm considered an anomaly.
no subject
And honestly, this is the most enjoyment I've gained from an inquiry in quite some time!
Your input has been more than valuable, however, and if there is anything you would like to continue on purely the physical side, I would be more than happy to offer my assistance. I am very glad to have met you, Thrawn.
And no, you should not trust Monsieur Astarion. I quite enjoy him myself, but I think you have made a very poor impression indeed, even if the debt is settled.
no subject
I was speaking about Rawne, Song Zichen, and doubtless a few others who were clever enough to have kept their correspondence private but congratulated him nonetheless. Those are the more dangerous ones to watch.
You seem to have more of an understanding of people here than I likely ever will. I'm pleased you thought to reach out.
no subject
That, about the wardens, is also the sort of information I wish to expand on.
When can you show me how to access your report?

Madamoiselle Florbelle. I am Mitth'raw'nuruodo. Enter and be welcome here.
no subject
She has an ear for words, but even that is a little beyond her at first speak. She gives him a curtsy instead and walks in.]
A pleasure.
[She holds out her communicator to him as she walks by.]
Show me, please.

Imagine a conventional stack of flimsis, or papers. You are researching a topic, and you wish to file these appropriately. In worlds and times before computers, typically you would use a filing system; a set of drawers with tabs, perhaps a category section or shorthand script to find what you're looking for, quickly.
Now imagine that all of your papers, all of your files and notes can fit here, in this device. This - [Thrawn taps the screen, making it all disappear] - is why this screen is conventionally called either a home, or desktop. As my desk here could have held papers at one time, this holds all of our shared research.
Now if I wished to create a new file - say, on our shared topic of death tolls - I would create a new folder, and label it as Death Tolls, or Death Toll Information. You may rename it if you wish.
[Thrawn goes slow, looking to Justine to make sure she's following as he explains]
You can see I've sent you the files I had as Astarion_death_toll and Thrawn_death_toll. We can move this file into our newly created folder by a motion called a 'click and drag', which I shall now demonstrate.
Opening the file itself is conducted in one of two ways. You may either click twice in rapid succession, or click while holding and selecting the option to open the file.
[As he does so, the text file Thrawn sent opens up in holo format. It details, painstakingly, everything Thrawn was able to determine, from body temperature to time of death-time of resurrection, to a pain scale he manufactured to show the rate of depreciation over time.]
no subject
Fascinating. I think I understand. [She won't know until she gets a novel file, but that's a problem for later. She's already stepping closer so she can read the text on the screen.]
How did you get these measurements?
no subject
no subject
The infirmary has such instruments?
no subject
[He inclines his head, shutting down the computer and handing Justine her device back]
Most are standard units of measure. Blood pressure and heart rate are two of the most important, as a sudden drop or increase is a good indication that a worse adverse event is about to take place.
no subject
[She inclines her head.]
Thank you. And do let me know about the bacta. I'd like to see it work for myself.
no subject
[genuinely!]
If you have further questions before I've secured the bacta, I am usually available.
no subject
This will keep me occupied for quite some time! [She flashes him another grin.]
My cabin is upstairs. First floor, third cabin. I'm awake most hours, so please stop by whenever you'd like.

One Minute After The Announcement
I'm sure you've seen the announcement?
Would you be willing to meet with me to discuss how this will proceed?
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
I have, and I will. Do you prefer one of our cabins or a more public setting?
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
If you feel up to it, I'd prefer to go to your cabin. Would that be acceptable?
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
[ It takes him about ten minutes, mostly because he'd wanted to powder his nose a bit and look his best. He's also bringing a notebook with him.
He knocks twice. ]
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
[Thrawn calls, as the door slides up to reveal...rather the opposite of Florian's own cabin, at least in part.
The walls, the floor, and the ceiling are charcoal grey, durasteel plating in the sort of rigid hegemony typical of mid-stage Empire starships. Very little furniture has been designed for comfort, instead taking on a utilitarian, almost brutalist architecture with sharp lines and white neon backlighting, in a way to make everything feel sterile and inhuman. This is a part of a ship that was one of many, a standardized look probably designed by someone who hated their officers feeling any sort of comfort, even the one to whom the cabin belongs.
But there are, strangely, parts that Thrawn has made his own. He sits at his desk, an enormous half-circle with him at the center of it, several chairs positioned around it, but behind him is a large indentation: a piece of art, bronze, of two four-eyed lizards in profile standing on angled triangles, using long fingers to grip the top-most edge. They stand guard over a bronze circle.
There's one large, tilted window which is shuttered, giving the room an eerie, incandescent quality with the low neon lighting and the glowing hologram table Thrawn sits at. A small door likely leads to his bedchambers; this is his office aboard the Chimaera, and as such houses some of his physical art pieces, including a featureless grid of display cases with small statues and relics of his times in other places.
Thrawn stands as Florian enters out of respect, hands at his back.]
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
I realize that you don't have a bath or shower of any sort, but you do have a facility for exiting waste, yes?
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
Is that really what you want your first question to be?
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
[ He turns a hand. ]
There will be periods where it is wisest to stay within one's room, as rooms do hold a certain amount of protection. I would also be willing to provide further protection given that I would guess you to come from a world largely lacking in magic and more than a few inmates have made a point of learning such skills or had them to start.
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
[Thrawn gestures to a chair in front of him, inviting Florian to sit as he too sits down at his desk opposite]
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
And though I realize space travel and 'magic' tend to be repelling poles, I assure you I have seen both, though practically speaking, I believe magic is merely science that hasn't quite caught up yet.
And you've assumed that I expel waste at all - I have met several species that do not do so in conventional ways, or live in closed bio systems.
...Incidentally, yes. There is a refresher station behind that door to your right.
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
In this case, however, I was speaking of 'world' in the sense of 'the social and political circles which you inhabit', as having magic in one's version of reality does not mean that one has the ability to use it, that it is practiced openly, or that it is politically advantageous to admit interest in such things. That was a guess, but that guess did come from some observation.
For what it's worth, as I told you, I tend to treat magic as a science in practice.
As for assuming that you expel waste, I did not: one does not know when one will be caught trapped in one's cabin with another. And if that is the case, then being caught without such a facility would be even more upsetting, I should think.
...but I'm glad to see you've been taken care of.
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
Indeed.
What else did you wish to discuss?
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
An ideal use of our brief time together.
Please continue.
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
Intentions first, then: inmates have a variety of opinions on the usefulness of a temporary warden. I would like to know if you have the intention to work towards graduation with me or if you merely see me as a placeholder until you are permanently paired with someone?
[ A pause. ]
There is no wrong answer, and if you happen to believe so, that does not discount any of the other topics we'll be discussing. But it will frame them differently.
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
As we have spoken before about a lack of standardization when it comes to inmate graduations, I am forced to assume that my own path towards that goal will not resemble anyone else's. Given that, while we are at a disadvantage until the Admiral sees fit to release my file, I believe there is still some insight to be gained from each warden here. Certain ones more so than others.
So no, Florian; you are not, nor ever will be, a placeholder to me.
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
Responsibilities: mine towards you include to answer or seek answers to any questions you may have which pertain to your progress, to provide anything you might need within reason for your comfort, safety, enrichment, and potentially to assist in your progress, to shield you from the meddling of other wardens (only one cook per pot, so to speak), to provide emotional/mental/social/and/or defensive support as is required, to represent your interests in the case of a dispute or issue, to ensure that your work assignment is appropriate to your interests, and provide a sounding board for any potential emotional, mental, or spiritual growth you might require.
Can you think of anything I have not covered which you feel would be appropriate?
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
Succinctly put. I would be...content with those parameters, for the most part.
You mentioned support and growth of emotional and mental natures. I do wonder if you would be interested in sparring: I find that when one's emotions are confused or muddled, physical exercise frees up the mind considerably.
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
I would, though you would need to provide some instruction first and foremost. My constitution, due to a plague which ran through my homeland, is not as great as it might have been, though I have since learned skills to bolster myself.
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
It would be my honor.
What would you have me do in exchange for your numerous gifts?
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
Forgive me, I do feel the need to spell out one more item: the respect of and defense of your privacy with exception of anything which might endanger my life, freedom, or the lives of others aboard directly.
[ He smiles, now more pleased with himself. ]
As for your own responsibilities, these include providing pertinent, accurate information in regards to your safety and well-being, timely communication should you feel required to commit murder, [ he pauses ] I would guess from your previous communication that you have no regular desire to kill people but I am well aware the Barge creates unusual social situations that may require it and in that case, I would prefer to find out from you than from any other source. [ Back to his notes ] That you engage in appropriate self care and in the event that you cannot, that you inform me so that I can assist you. Attendance to your assigned job. Should you dislike your job for any reason, I will assist you in finding another placement. To be informed of any other wardens who may hold issue with you or your actions other than in regards to purely interpersonal conflict. Honest communication regarding our work together and any misgivings that you may have at any point.
[ A glance at Thrawn]
You are always welcome to defer in regards to any questions I would ask but a blunt and forthright refusal is much preferred over lying.
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
He thinks over the parameters in front of him, lining them up with his own goals in his mind and finding significant overlap.
He does quirk a slight smile]
I do not feel that dislike of a job is enough to demand a switch. Many jobs are unpleasant, but they are still required for a ship to run efficiently.
[And should he want to switch later, he will probably do so because he's already revamped that section of the ship and will consider a move more of a lateral promotion to assist elsewhere]
You are correct; I have no innate desire to harm anyone on this ship, with perhaps one exception, which I am happy to explain shortly.
Self-care has never been an issue to my knowledge and I doubt will become an issue here, unless of course the facilities are compromised.
I have not missed a custodial shift yet, though I received an offer from Rawne in Maintenance. I would request at least one more month in custodial, however, due to its overlap with Maintenance and my desire to examine the mouse droids. Their design may yet be improved upon. From Maintenance, I hope to further secure from Cho Jedao an invitation to Engineering. I have often been accused of being too thorough to the point of reprimand and demerits in regards to my...let us call it 'eagerness' in examining and revamping ship criteria.
[somebody may have already complained to the Admiral about insufficient life boat capacity]
I find it interesting you discuss a need for my privacy. I would like to revise that; I will tell you anything and everything you wish to know about me, but I will instead request privacy on behalf of my people. This includes their locations, their military and social structures, internal and external matters of state, up to and including what we call ourselves. I realize it is an unusual request, but I have carried much of my people's secrets with me to the grave and would like to continue in my guardianship.
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
Trust very much goes both ways. ]
Forgive me for choosing succinctness over specificity: I meant only to make it clear that if your problem is interpersonal or even simply boredom, I would not ask you to 'stick it out' or make you deal with someone overly long whom you find personally distasteful more than is necessary: if you want a new job, we will find you one.
As for self-care, of that I had little doubt, but this place does place one in situations and taxes people psychologically in ways which they may not be accustomed to and I have found that those who are incredibly self-sufficient often have the hardest time reaching out for assistance in such a situation. Thus stating plainly.
[ A quick smile. ]
Any such reprimands or demerits will hardly put you in the red in my books.
[ He turns his hand. ]
And as you are a representative of your people, their privacy is included in that assurance.
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
I have performed many jobs under...less than ideal commanders.
[Read; hostile and prejudiced idiots]
While it may be common in civilian circles to switch jobs in accordance with one's personal desires, a life in military service is not usually given such choice. I will go where I am needed.
You believe me self-sufficient?
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
[ Just... being honest. ]
And while I'm no stranger to working with idiots, I do find it makes the work of finding greater value in sentient life needlessly more difficult. One must remember one's priorities.
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
Very well, Florian. Your terms are acceptable. We have covered responsibilities; shall we turn towards goals? I believe that will be a far shorter exchange.
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
I'd like to set goals with you for the month that I am your temporary warden, and I'd like to propose some ideas for continual assistance towards your freedom, regardless of your assignment.
[ He looks up from his notebook. ]
My warden was only one piece of the puzzle in graduating. Other wardens whom I came to trust contributed significantly to the effort and should things remain on the current course, I believe I could continue to be a resource to you.
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
[even before their pairing, the guide and Florian's follow-up were invaluable to Thrawn in his journey to get acclimated]
Let me hear your goals, and I shall volunteer my own. I venture there may be overlap.
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
First: ensure that you have a suitable cabin and supplies necessary for any hobbies or interests you would like to continue pursuing, as well as for short term emergency situations.
Second: ensure that you have some manner of social connection and or resource among the inmate population, or have the beginnings of them. Isolation here can lead to greater difficulties than in most locations, given the size and lack of outside contact on board.
Third: ensure that you are aware of the inmate speakeasy, which is still run by my brother should you need assistance for entry. Also of the ledger placed there where information has been recorded regarding a number of wardens. Alas that I will never get to read the updates.
Fourth: ensure you're aware of your options regarding medical care: there is a young being named Kahl willing to provide medical assistance (magical, I presume) outside of warden knowledge. Further, I also can provide medical assistance (both magical and more traditionally scientific) outside of the infirmary staff's knowledge and that I would consider that work to be privileged information within the privacy constraints mentioned.
Fifth: discuss any specific shortcomings you find in the ship, the process, the social structure, etc and determine what needs to be discussed or done to ensure that it won't prevent you from making personal progress in your time here. Then we will go over it for viability and importance to the ship's safety and community function before we create a matrix to determine priority order. Following that, we would work out an action plan for tackling those issues.
Sixth: I would like to then assess what, if any, current concerns exist which might present a problem for you moving forward or create roadblocks to determining next steps or following through with them; a solid base leads to a steadier climb.
Seventh: then we can start determining what your progression might look like, where we think you might need to go, what obstacles you'll be facing in moving forward, and what we can continue to do for one another outside of a predetermined warden-inmate paradigm.
[ He looks up. ]
Obviously we can add on if we get all that done in a month, but I prefer to be ambitious.
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
You may mark as complete goals One, Two, and Four.
As for goal Three, I am aware of the inmate speakeasy but had not yet had time or knowledge to access it.
Do you want to read updates in the warden ledger? I ask because I have already been approached by another warden here asking after it from me.
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
I created it. And I believe it's purpose stands, despite how frivolous some of the entries might be. Best it remain inmate only. I trust you to inform me of anything important regarding myself.
[ He is very curious about who might be trying to peek. But he won't ask Thrawn to betray a trust. That seems ill suited to their first official meeting. ]
The entrance is in the inmate restrooms, and one must speak a passphrase into a certain mirror. It will open a door that leads down and into the speakeasy. Magic is used, a spell by a magician since gone, to keep wardens from within.
[ But he marks things off accordingly. ]
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
I understand where the entrance is, but not the passphrase.
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
I can see if my brother can provide that. Otherwise, nearly any inmate if asked would probably provide it. There is something of an agreement on that score.
Sebastian Michaelis is another good option.
Re: One Minute After The Announcement
[he asks, pulling up his own notes on Florian so that he can add to them.]
no subject
Monsieur, I do hate to bother you, but could you find the time to assist me with a situation? In the - the speakeasy of the inmate showers.

I'm gonna want that efficiency report and also your help building a dunk tank. Do they have dunk tanks in space?
no subject
[He starts transferring over his report. Basically, the way Richter described it, the entire crew worked one floor a day together. Thrawn reorganized it to where each inmate would clean one floor, with two assigned to the heavier traffic levels 1 and 2 due to the cafeteria and the infirmary.
All told, it meant that there would not be nearly as much crap to clean up after eight days of no cleaning, with the added bonus of (since there are more people on custodial than there are floors) allowing days off in between]
If there are, I have not heard of them. Can you describe it?
no subject
It's a carnival game thing. Four or five feet square. The bottom is watertight, and there's a seat that's rigged on a hinge halfway up, and a door in the back of the top half. The hinge drops the seat flat against the wall if you hit a big button that's on the outside.
The idea is, you fill the bottom with like three feet of water, and somebody sits in the seat, and people try to throw balls at the target to dunk them. I've got some ideas for custodial folks getting to throw, or voting on who's sitting. The details can be worked out. The point is, fun silly perks that aren't just 'ask the admiral for thing'.
I can show you a working model if your warden will spot us an enclosure visit.
no subject
I'd also like to give you a gift; the mouse droid Richter allowed me to have. I've cleaned him and he can now fill a slot on custodial staff.
no subject
Hey, I know it's kind of a small thing in comparison, but if you ever want me to clarify somebody else's earth slang for you, I'm happy to.
no subject
no subject
I might be shaky on some of the historical folks, but I think I at least overlap with the plurality of passengers.
no subject
One would hope.
no subject
Is there something else we gotta do on your planet to count?
Oh, and another thing, can I get a list of everyone you got on side yesterday? I think I remember seeing most of them but I don't know everybody's name yet.
no subject
On my planet?
You may wish to reevaluate your question. As I understand, there are many ways on Earth one can befriend another. Why would it not be the same where I come from?
Yes.
[He attaches a list over to Frankie, including everyone on custodial staff he pinged privately]
no subject
...that's a lie, I'm exaggerating for humorous effect, although kids do make those sometimes.
Do you think planet was the important part of the question?
no subject
Perhaps. It would certainly force me to narrow down my idea of what I consider my people and their traditions.

Hello, sir.
My name is Lucy MacLean, I'm a warden here and I've been working in the library since I arrived.
I'm interested in the work you did to improve the custodial rota.
no subject
Interested in enacting it in the library, interested in assisting the current custodial staff, or simply a curious point of view?
no subject
The latter two. I did offer to take over supervision of the custodial team, but they don't seem to want to quit.
[Seems weird to her because if you've signed up for a job you should...do that job...buuut never mind!]
I know you had some conditions for sharing it with them, so I won't do it behind your back.
no subject
They are challenging their own work force to 'do better'.
no subject
Thank you, Thrawn.
And, um - are you okay? I feel like there's been some...stuff bubbling up around that job.
no subject
[an unsure moment of silence]
Why do you ask?
no subject
...Some people might not have liked being spoken to the way that you were.
no subject
no subject
Okay, if you're sure. And - you can call me Lucy, by the way.
no subject
[Thrawn sends over his report: what he did, who he reached out to and why, what motivations or incentives he used and how these can be utilized to go further - how spite can turn to wanting appreciation for one’s hard work, how off-days or short vacations could be offered in lieu of monetary goods, and how most inmates he spoke to believe custodial work to be the place to transfer out of, never into, primarily due to it being the “default” job despite being one that requires more strain and physical effort than others.
He offers a blueprint of the mouse droid and how to build more using the cybernetic repair bay, currently empty of wardens, and how it can be tasked with the worst jobs that inmates may struggle with.
He includes an example roster of who can go on which floor, who is never to be bothered and should be moved immediately, and a list of potential people who were driven from custodial who may, with proper incentive, be brought back.
Also included is the rubric he said Richter should create, which denotes what’s considered a good or poor job of cleaning.]
no subject
[After a little while spent digesting:]
This is great. How long did it take you to put this together?
no subject
Two days, and an additional day to reach out to all parties involved.
no subject
Right. I guess this is all kind of small potatoes for you, seeing how your message says you were an Admiral. Grand Admiral.
no subject
no subject
[Lucy chuckles.]
I - yeah. I didn't think about it that way. I meant more in the sense of organising stuff, making it more efficient?
no subject
Yes. I enjoy examining why we do things the way we do them, deciding on how best to address problems or blockages my people were having, and working to uncover solutions we could practice implementing.
no subject
Not everybody can see the big picture like that. It sounds like you could help a lot of people.
no subject
My struggles are with understanding people. I often have no idea how I must phrase myself, or how to have more patience for the stubborn, the reticent, and the disrespectful. I find that more often than not, I either make matters worse or waste valuable time when it could be better spent elsewhere.
no subject
Oh-
My brother has that problem. Or, well. It'd be a problem if he...cared about it.
no subject
[tell me more!]
no subject
Yeah. Norm is...a lot of people think he's rude or disrespectful, but he's just honest. He doesn't say the polite thing if he doesn't believe it, he doesn't really try to spare other people's feelings. Add in that he's really smart, and he notices the small stuff, and...well, I think maybe he makes other people feel less smart, sometimes.
no subject
Insightful.
Fortunate he has you to interpret for him.
[This might be a dig from others. From Thrawn it's a genuine compliment]

[Lucy laughs again, softly.]
Oh, I do not do that! I don't even think he'd want me to. But I've known him his whole life, so...I know where he's coming from. We trust each other.

Thank you.
Did you - have anybody like that? People who understood you?
no subject
[Never two together, and never for long enough]
Their insights were invaluable. I admit to some...well-placed nostalgia now when I think of them.
But the gulf of time and space is challenging to cross.

I'm sorry, Thrawn. I hope you can make friends here too.

That's super! Now you can add one more.

Yep!

I am honored to accept.
After the Flood

Did you wish to cancel this week's physics lesson?

I don't remember much about what transpired. Or after.
Did I hurt you?

Did Nana find you?
Re: After the Flood
No. Shall I inquire after her?
Re: After the Flood
Re: After the Flood
[Never one for small talk, Thrawn's answers are more clipped than usual. The event disturbed him greatly; he's preparing a report on Hanna's actions to be delivered to his warden now]
Re: After the Flood

I'm sure you're going to get Arthur sputtering at you about how enforcing a document that hasn't yet been ratified is clearly, nay, *self-evidently* impossible. But he will likely remain conveniently silent about how it will be enforced if and when it is ratified.
I take it then you have also not been privy to the discussions with inmates that led to the production of this inmate-authored bill of rights?
no subject
no subject
Do you consider the topics that are addressed, mostly just abusive behavior by wardens (which Arthur himself claims is vanishingly rare), to be of particular importance?
no subject
The pushback I received on all fronts, especially with regard to safety measures makes for an inherently stagnant creative space.
I believe you had some disagreement yourself.
no subject
[THIS IS HOW WALTER REMEMBERS IT.]
Do you know any inmate who considers wardens intentionally, directly abusing their power to be their biggest concern?
no subject
I also recall you taking offense to the way I dated the ship but did not produce a viable alternative.
No. But this was not something I had taken into consideration. I find that a broad range of powers is best when dealing with matters and if the concerns are too egregious, demotion will occur.
That being said, I cannot make guesses into the minds of my fellow prisoners. Perhaps someone should make a poll.
[such dry sarcasm on behalf of so much politicizing. Thrawn is in hell]
no subject
Also, basically no one else cared either, so I figured there were not going to be cases of a Barge community history actually getting mucked up by the description year 7 of the barge unit.
I digress. I think you have a valid perspective that wardens have their powers for a reason, and that's frankly a more dignifying approach than presenting extremely common imprisonment practices as either the height of cruelty *or* the height of mercy. Notice for instance how wardens reading their own inmates' files is taken for granted. Why? I know some wardens actually think they shouldn't without permission. Why is one common practice condoned, the other condemned?
I respect your answer that you haven't heard anything in particular from other inmates, so I don't have too much more to ask. To be perfectly frank, I wouldn't believe that an inmate wrote this if that weren't too bold a lie in such a closed community. My investigation shall continue elsewhere...
no subject
But you are correct: let us move on.
There is a difficulty in a catch-all system when everyone is from vastly different experiences. I trust the Admiral to pair me with the best possible warden: very rarely have I seen unpairings occur. There is a system already: one that the Admiral has created, where each pairing will have its own rules and standards based on a mutual warden-inmate understanding. I believe other wardens stepping in to tell my warden what to do with me is grossly improper and a waste of time: if I decide to do something egregious that warrants punishment, my warden is clever enough to redirect.
We were, after all, paired for a reason.
Do you wish to discover who is the author of this declaration?
no subject
I would happy to know the author, but I don't intend to uncover the author. I would be happy to have an in depth conversation with any inmate who sincerely believes the bill of rights will be helpful! I'd go to whoever said any such thing first.
Would the possibility of this "improper" meddling be bothersome enough for you to oppose the bill that would make it more commonplace?
no subject
I would like to know who could think they know what my warden and I require better than we know ourselves.
Are you asking for my support?
no subject
I'll admit you and I may have incompatible long-term goals. But in the short-term, seeing this bill rebuked would be quite satisfying.
no subject
no subject
What would satisfy you?
Actually, more interesting question. Have you blown up a planet?
no subject
Thrawn hesitates. He has a strong feeling Walter may know his galaxy, but Thrawn is reluctant to voice his thoughts on the matter. The Death Star is a secret during his time; he has come very close to being executed for discovering it, and has been working to stop it from ever coming into play.
He does not wish to make Walter a target, should they ever share an enemy]
no subject
Apologies if that was a stereotype.

[precisely at two, Thrawn appears by the door to the study rooms. He seems to have taken the port in stride, no longer as pale-blue as he may have been a week or two ago.
He regards Aerith with an acknowledging nod of his head and waits for her to pick the room]
no subject
She nodded back to him, before moving towards an empty study room, motioning him inside.]
Here, if you don't mind.
no subject
no subject
If anything...I want to apologize for not speaking to you for so long.
[And she sighed, and made to sit opposite him.]
no subject
The fault is mine. Florian indicated that I have broken your heart and our friendship with my actions. Please be assured that silence after a fall-out is inevitable.
no subject
Did...wait. Is that...is that exactly what Florian said?
no subject
I have no desire to hurt you further. I withdrew.
no subject
[She sits there, stunned for a few moments, staring at the table. She can understand it to some extent but...
Boy she is going to get a headache from this isn't she.]
Thrawn...you hurt me. But...that...didn't break the friendship.
Unless...you don't want to be friends?
no subject
I suggest a system where you use my mind and skills to yours and the ship's benefit, and I will do no further harm.
[agonizing though it may be to sit on his hands]
no subject
Thrawn...
I...don't think we're understanding each other at all.
I don't want to use you. I never want to use you. You...do you realize how much you're hurting me? Right now?
How much you're hurting yourself?
no subject
No. My apologies.
However, I will clarify that I am happiest when I can be used for the benefit of all.
no subject
[She leaned over the table, gripping the edge of it.]
When you say 'used', it makes you sound like an object. I don't like that.
I've gotten that enough with what I am back home.
Do you even understand why you hurt me in the first place? Asked Florian? Anyone? Got any clarity at all?
no subject
That is my choice.
Florian has placed me in therapeutic sessions with Doctor Sheehan in order to provide insight. Doctor Sheehan is establishing a bond of mutual trust before clarity is achieved, or so he claims.
no subject
It doesn't make it better.]
Your choice. Not our choice.
[Aerith dropped her head, and had to take in some slow, shaky breaths. She felt so...so hurt.]
I-I didn't want our friendship to end. I thought- I thought we could talk and fix this. Instead...
Why didn't you ask me...?
no subject
Florian will know how to fix this; there is the urge to call him, but he is unsure if that will make things worse. He sits in silence, terrified of Aerith's tears and how he has somehow managed to make her cry again.]
no subject
Aerith made to stand up.]
I'm sorry Thrawn. I hurt you, again.
I wanted us to-reconnect. I wanted- well. It's selfish of me to expect...anything without validating your feelings.
I'll leave you alone.
I won't use you.
no subject
He texts his warden under the table and attempts to stall for time]
Please wait one moment. I seek...clarification and understanding.
no subject
On...what, exactly?
[She'd been ready to leave, but...no dramatic exit where she could cry it out, clearly.]
no subject
[He stands abruptly as Florian knocks on the door]
no subject
[She huffs out an angry breath, before turning at the knock.]
Who...?
no subject
[Thrawn does not typically emote as well as others, but there is some desperation and relief in his tone, hidden to all except those who know him best]
He is far better than I at words and I may need him as a sort of…cultural interpreter.
no subject
[She got up and went towards the door, to let him in.]
Because I'm going. You two can talk it out.
no subject
no subject
But...he asked.
She shook once, before going to the door, violently pulling it open for Florian to enter, before retreating, wiping at her eyes again with the flat of her palm. She's still very upset.
Good thing she didn't come with her staff.]
no subject
Aerith, would you perhaps be willing to take a moment or two outside to get a drink of water while Thrawn catches me up on things? Ten minutes, at the most, if you can allow me that so I can be of assistance.
[ A chance for Aerith to collect herself quietly while he does, indeed, get caught up, without her 'going'. Just a pause. ]
no subject
Here the battlefield is different. He is terrified. Florian is here but he can’t get his brain to cooperate, nearly mute. He stares at them both, silent. Irreparable harm is a dreaded outcome and yet he cannot seem to say a correct thing to make Aerith better.
Words always fail him when he most desires to use them correctly.]
no subject
You can text me when you think you're ready.
[She needs to splash her face at least. If the wrong person saw her crying...
She felt a wave of nausea and anxiety.]
If you'll excuse me?
[The sooner she cleaned up, settled down, the better.]
no subject
[ A quick and easy smile as he steps in and lets Aerith out. Then his focus is on Thrawn. ]
Just so that I'm caught up and we can be productive, no? She'll be right back.
no subject
Thank you for coming so quickly.
no subject
Breathe.
All is not lost. You are not in this alone.
no subject
[slowly, his hands cease their shaking. He squeezes Florian's hands once, in gratitude, before withdrawing his own back to himself]
Aerith began to cry again, very suddenly. I do not know what I said or did that caused her such emotional distress, but it would grow worse the longer I spoke.
I am sorry. I understand you do not wish to be brought into these matters as they are happening.
no subject
That is precisely when I prefer to be brought in: before or during. That's when I can be the most effective. My frustrations were in coming in afterwards, at the end, when there was little I could do.
no subject
I could see no other option available.
no subject
She's well aware of your difficulties. And she and I have an accord. Nor did she seem surprised to see me.
She just needed a moment to collect herself.
no subject
[he settles down but uneasily so, as lost as he usually is when sitting in a room devoid of art, culture, and needed context]
no subject
For now, I'd like you to tell me what happened.
no subject
Aerith requested we meet in person to speak - she made no mention of what topic - and suggested the library's study room.
She instructed me to relax, that this was an apology and not a lecture. She expressed that she was sorry for allowing contact between us to cease. I acknowledged that the fault lay with me: that I had, as you said, broken her heart, and that any lapse in friendship or communication was similarly my burden to bear. I attempted to explain that I had no wish to hurt her further.
Aerith reiterated that I had hurt her, but that our friendship was still in existence, unless I did not wish it.
This was a relief and a worry to hear: I explained my fear that hurting her again would be an inevitability, so I made a similar suggestion regarding my project limitations. Since my failure with the alarms was part of what caused her distress, I could allow her to direct and use my skills. In this way I hoped to convey that I still wished to provide assistance in keeping her safe, but without overstepping personal boundaries.
This is where the conversation began to turn. She expressed a desire not to use me and further elaborated that I was hurting her and myself at this very moment.
This is where I became initially confused. You and I have had conversations where I have told you that I am happiest when I can be put to use. I told Aerith a similar sentiment, but she reacted negatively and claimed my words meant I saw myself as an object, and prior experience made those words carry a negative connotation. But they are how I prefer to describe myself and what I need to be happy - as you have claimed it is what you desire. This too was met with negative emotion: evidently I am not to use these words to describe myself unless I have her permission?
She asked if I had sought clarity in why I had hurt her in the first place: I said that I was in the process of it, but that Doctor Sheehan had been working on establishing rapport first and foremost. Alarmingly, she began to talk about our friendship in the past tense and that she did not wish for it to end: she asked me why I had not asked her a question, but I do not know what she wished me to ask her.
That was when she began to cry once again. I realized that speaking likely would make matters worse. She followed with a series of semi-connected sentences regarding her apology to me for hurting me - and it was not hurt I feel, but alarm first and foremost - and that she did not wish our friendship to end, and this was her attempt to talk the matter through.
I reached out to you discretely in order to save this before it had the potential to grow worse, and attempted to explain your sudden appearance as a desire to seek understanding in how I have hurt her.
Again, that seemed to make matters worse; Aerith did not like my choice of words, or perhaps the generality of it. Perhaps she wishes for a more specific apology. That is when you entered.
no subject
We'll take it a piece at a time.
First: 'any lapse in friendship or communication was similarly my burden to bear'.
Incorrect. By that logic, any lapse in safety protocols was never yours to concern yourself with.
To tell someone that is to take away their agency to act in the situation and to insinuate that you do not believe that they care about the situation, despite any relationship being maintained from two ends.
It also, by extension, treats the relationship and communication as a 'burden', which could be seen to be implying that she thinks having a relationship with you is a burden, which can be hurtful when that isn't something she said or meant to convey. She can feel hurt and upset that you misunderstood her the same way you are hurt and upset when others misunderstand you.
no subject
That was not my intention at all.
no subject
no subject
I understand. Please continue.
no subject
'I explained my fear that hurting her again would be an inevitability, so I made a similar suggestion regarding my project limitations. '
If you could explain precisely what you mean by that? I want to be sure I understand the potential nuances.
no subject
Yes.
Simply that because I am still learning what will hurt her and more importantly, that I should care more about that than her continued safety, I know I will make the occasional slip up, especially when it comes to ship works. Therefore I wished her to take the lead, especially when it comes to her own greenhouse revitalization projects. I know my designs on this ship and my desire to not wait for her input is a key driver to her unhappiness- therefore I was suggesting she take the lead to put me at any project she so chose.
no subject
I see.
So... in a smaller way, you've made the same mistake with her as you have in some respect made in the larger scope of your choices: your priority of her safety took precedence over her decision. She had said that she regarded your friendship, a partnership of equal partners in maintaining the relationship, to still stand. Thus, she was telling you that she accepts that potential risk of your mistakes which might hurt her while also expecting you, as a friend and someone interested in maintaining the relationship with effort, to work on improving.
By insisting she take the lead, you are changing the relationship without her consent or desire, and instead of proposing a situation where you both work in tandem, as she desires you to do, an equal partnership where you build something together, you simply reversed your positions to where she would make decisions and you would just follow along. This is an unbalanced situation, one that is usually found between superior and subordinate, as opposed to a friendship.
[ A turn of his hand. ]
For example: if two people were working on building a house together, an equal partnership includes the two of them considering the needs of the house together, planning out the logistics together, dividing the work between them together according to each one's needs and wants and working through any disagreements together, before finding the materials and beginning to work.
Originally, you both had considered the needs together, but at some point you went off on your own to go through the rest of those steps without allowing her to take part, because you didn't realize the value that she placed on sharing the work and determinations throughout with you. What you are proposing would have have her doing all of that planning without you, and merely telling you what to do as she decides it when it comes to implementation.
...which doesn't remedy the situation. Because she has two primary goals: accomplishing the work, yes, but the second goal, which she holds just as important, is to do this with you. She enjoys the process and she wishes to enjoy it with you.
no subject
Each time I interact with Aerith, I find a new way to insult or hurt her. I don’t see why she would wish to enjoy anything. She was certainly not enjoying this conversation.
no subject
And I think the problem is just that you're in a bit of a spiral about this.
[ He gives Thrawn a faint smile, hopefully encouraging. ]
I'm going to give you two phrases. I'd like you to use them when you find yourself stuck. The first?
"What does that look like to you in practice?"
If someone says 'I want this' or 'I'd like this' or 'I still want to keep our friendship', seek clarity on what those words mean to them in practice. You also indicate that you are interested in their priorities and listening to them while you're working through things. It will give you examples to decide if that's something that sounds like it will work for you or not.
And the second?
"Is my understanding correct?"
To be used after giving a rundown of how you view the situation, or what you think the problem is. Use it before proposing a solution.
...and feel free to use both of them multiple times.
"What would that look like in practice?" Their answer baffles you. Try and summarize. "Is my understanding correct?" If they say yes? Good. If not, prompt them for more. Then. "What does that look like in practice?" And repeat as needed.
[ He considers telling him he can shift the language a little, not to necessarily repeat them verbatim, but then he decides that's 202 and they aren't there yet. ]
Sound reasonable?
no subject
Yes. Thank you.
no subject
He nods. ]
Of course. Let me know how it goes, and we can make adjustments as needed.
[ A breath out. ]
Shall I see if Aerith is prepared to return?
[ He looks back to Thrawn. ]
She feels very strongly about you, treasures her relationship with you despite the difficulties. She knows that at your core, you are someone greatly worth knowing who enriches her life. These difficulties are painful, but she's wise and thoughtful and thus, she knows that as long as you are trying, you are worth these efforts to her.
Your desire not to hurt her is laudable. But she clearly deems you worthy of a little pain, as many people are.
no subject
Thank you, Florian.
no subject
Of course. I am always at your disposal. Well, whenever I'm awake, anyways.
no subject
I am prepared - you may call her back.
no subject
[ And he pulls out the communicator. ]
Aerith? We've finished up if you don't mind coming back.
no subject
[She'd come back from Florian's room, and knock quietly on the doorframe to let them know she arrived.]
no subject
Thank you for returning.
no subject
Thank you for returning, Aerith, I hope my facilities were suitable. But... do feel free to chat. I'll try not to interject unless I feel we might be veering into an unfortunate direction.
no subject
Your facilities are very pleasant- thank you for letting me use them.
[A little formal, for Aerith. But she nodded to Thrawn.]
I'm not sure...how to restart the conversation. But I am sorry for upsetting you Thrawn.
I didn't want to cry and hurt you in return.
no subject
I accept your apology. I also wish to convey that I would like to renew our friendship from my side and endeavor to act as a partner in it, who will neither overstep nor place undue burden on you.
I will accomplish this through better means of communication before I act.
no subject
Thank you Thrawn. Before, it sounded as if you wanted to end it and have me just...use you for my own ends.
It upset me because I don't want to use people. Hearing it seemed...dehumanizing.
no subject
And yet I am not human.
[oh no the Chiss have jokes]
I had no plans to end it. Merely that when talking with Florian, I prefer to be pointed in a direction where I can do the most good. I was attempting to compliment your morality and desire to help others, coupled with my tendencies to overstep my boundaries; that you could lead me as you chose. But this would not be a mutual partnership.
no subject
It sounds a lot more a superior and employee. And while that could work for, say, the reed pond project, I would rather we were equals.
And look out for each other. Like when I was overdoing it, and you watched over me while I slept.
no subject
I admit a certain confusion as to the warden-inmate relationship, having categorized it many times as a superior-subordinate role. But you have yet to command me or tell me an order, so I will concede this is a more nuanced position we find ourselves in.
no subject
As a warden, I view myself not as someone's superior, but someone who is here to help. I've always been a civilian.
When I was viewed as something else, pressured to be something else, it was never comfortable. So- this is complicated.
And that's okay. We can be complicated and still be friends.
no subject
[he's been in the military for two-thirds of his life now; since he was a young 20-year-old cadet. Civilian life does not suit Thrawn]
Will you explain the significance of birthdays in your culture? I am aware most of our troubles stemmed from failing to secure a proper calendar or warning system when enacting alarms; I wish to understand why a particular day held such meaning.
no subject
This is the first time it's happened since I died.
And it would be the first time that Zack would be celebrating with me in four years, at least. Longer for him, since he's been here for four years more.
I had...an idea of how I wanted the day to go. No working for either of us. A date. I wanted to pretend, for a little while, that I didn't have responsibility, that I was turning 23 and we could think of the future.
The alarm startled it out of me. It wasn't the cultural significance. It was...
Having a selfish day. A happy day for just me.
I don't know if I'm explaining it well.
no subject
no subject
If I am understanding correctly - [yay, tools!] - you wished to have a day free from the burdens you are frequently subjected to, through outside and internal influence both. You sought to take the day to reflect, and the alarms shattered that illusion.
no subject
I went to sleep, excited for a new day and it...
Wasn't what I wanted. And I knew that I couldn't simply have my day.
It was now everyone else's, because people would want or need me for comfort or to calm down.
And that upset me.
no subject
I do not think I should shoulder this when I was not informed beforehand. But now that I am aware, I will endeavor to make a day free from responsibility to make up for the one that was stolen from you.
Who was it who needed you?
no subject
I had been trying to keep my birthday low key.
And at the moment, it's less about those who I did encounter, and more of the feeling of obligation I felt at the time- on a day I wanted to have with none.
Things do happen. Life isn't fair. What I did wasn't fair.
But you weren't fair to yourself either.
no subject
Do you often shoulder obligation without prompting? Perhaps your days of relaxation are closer than you think.
no subject
And I think it'll be for awhile. We'll have to see, but I doubt I'll be given...the deal I'd like.
no subject
no subject
no subject
But I see no reason to lose hope. What is your deal?
no subject
I really...want to live.
no subject
no subject
no subject
no subject
Because even if I get either one, I'm going to stay with Zack until he's ready.
no subject
no subject
No. World stability- I'm being literal in that sense- and revival is...
Especially complicated, because it sounds like I will be in the planet, with the memories of all things, for two years at least.
It's not bam, here I am kind of thing. It has to be done carefully.
no subject
no subject
Along with trillions of lives that have lived and will live in the planet.
no subject
no subject
Can you explain the relationship between life and your planet and individual souls for him?
no subject
The Lifestream to be specific. It is a river thay goes throughout the planet, that is filled with memories with every living thing.
Not a metaphor. Our bodies break down to planetary essence and goes back to the planet.
Including the soul. Most of the time, the individual soul will break down overtime, and while the memories remain, the soul comes back in the form of new life.
In short- I can't return to any planet to visit, because...I'm essentially planetary water, held together by the Admiral.
no subject
Have you tried?
no subject
I'm...dead back home? It's too risky to try.
no subject
no subject
But this is starting to sound more like a high risk experiment where, at best, if I do try, I won't be able to come back.
And you already know that I have a background where I was experimented on as a child.
Please reflect on that for a moment.
no subject
He nods, once]
Very well.
no subject
I'm sure that, as something of an expert in this energy, Aerith has good reason to believe that her understanding of how it works makes the risk of the experiment greater than the potential gain in knowledge in regards to this subject in ways that would be difficult to easily summarize and explain to us both when we are so new to this system.
[He dips his head to her.]
no subject
Or that something wouldn't go very wrong if I did try.
I could come back, physically, but only physically. Living people who are exposed too much to the Lifestream can have their minds and souls swept away.
There's still a lot that I don't know when it comes to having any control over the Lifestream. I can only assume that if the reports are true, it's something I learned after I entered it, and have because I'm a Cetra.
no subject
So you are essence made manifest, only here by the Admiral's grace. Is that correct?
no subject
no subject
Then, Thrawn reaches forward and prods Aerith, quite hard, on her arm]
no subject
[She doesn't move but...she's puzzled.]
Um? Thrawn? I'm not...you wouldn't really see it unless I was dead?
no subject
Forgive me; an experiment only.
[his tone is dry but his eyes are mischievous. He's messing with her, in his own odd way]
no subject
And as I was resurrected by graduation from being dead.
no subject
I keep thinking of you as...Florian. Not Florian, vampire.
Or...undead?
I just thought...vampires are vampires?
[She shrugs, and glances at Thrawn.]
no subject
no subject
I don't really see Florian slinking? He's very light on his feet, but I guess...
Florian? Does this mean you're cold all the time? Would you like some hugs to warm up?
no subject
I would not mind a hug or two from you, Aerith, but I assure you, I am more comfortable now than when I was not a vampire.
[ A small smile at Thrawn. ]
And my change in stance is more of a choice than anything. I assure you that if I chose to, I could appear as docile and vulnerable as a bared throat. Appearing in the pose of a prey animal, an easy victim, is a very useful tactic. I did it before as part of my business. Being a vampire only accelerated my choice in shifting to something more honest.
no subject
And...I am glad it's comfortable for you Florian.
[She offers him a fond smile, before moving to clasp her hands in front of her.]
Though- that makes me wonder. How do you feel you move Thrawn? What does your aura project to the world?
no subject
[a slight head tilt towards Aerith]
It is difficult to describe to a non-Chiss. An 'aura' is akin to many things at once: it is how I can identify others before they make themselves known outside doors, or behind masks or disguises.
Yours is something I have memorized as belonging to Aerith Gainsborough and no other. Were you in a crowd of thousands, I could find you.
no subject
I imagine it's something like hearing someone's heartbeat. Or their magical signature would be to me.
no subject
It sounds like...how I sometimes have just the awareness of people I know sometimes. It's not like...colors, or music, or magic.
It just is. Like...Florian is still...Florian, vampire or not.
no subject
Forgive me when I overstep. It is difficult to determine your boundaries between 'curious friend' and 'invasive scientist.'
no subject
And there are still things I don't know about it. So long as you're not trying to get samples or strapping me down to a chair...
I'm not going to punch you in the nose, literally or figuratively.
no subject
You could not reach my nose.
no subject
[A slow eyebrow rise.]
no subject
[ A smile at Aerith. ]
I don't think he does, but you never know.
no subject
Careful, Warden Gainsborough. We would not wish to test the merit of the so-called Inmate Bill of Rights so soon.
no subject
[She smiled up at him. He's being so dramatic! It's actually...very funny.]
I think you're just scared of my big stick.
[And she. Makes to tap him very gently on the tip of the nose.]
no subject
A preemptive strike against a known warrior. You are bold.
[his stick now; he doesn't try to wrest it from her hands - that's not the game - but he will not release it without verbal input from Aerith]

[She's still smiling. Still looks the same as usual. But she doesn't let go of her stick either.]
Because a preemptive strike is sometimes the only way to win. Right, Grand Admiral Thrawn?
no subject
We appear to be at a stalemate. I have the upper hand in strength, but you could use your staff to fire at me. Or you could call for back-up.
[a nod towards Florian]
The question is, does his loyalties lie with you, his fellow warden...or his own inmate?

A MYSTERY! ]
no subject
He'd lose, and he knows it. So, he has two choices, really!
Do nothing, or...take us both out with a sleep spell.
[She smile brightened.]
Or, third:
Realize that while you have my staff, you should really look out for my feet.

[She offered a quiet laugh.]
But you're right. I wouldn't try to ever hurt you if I could help it, ever.
You win.
no subject
Perhaps. I too would not wish to hurt you, so a stalemate is a more adept term.
no subject
[Gently, she made to set her staff down onto the floor.]
We both know that we'd rather keep each other safe.
I never want to hurt you Thrawn. Because I care for you so, so much as my friend.
So...I'd feel conflicted if you really wanted me to punch you seriously.
no subject
[a glance to Florian to make sure this is the right word]

[Her smile is warm.]
I have been learning how to punch properly. Alexei has been teaching me.

We don't want either of us to be turned into cats or anything. Just in case.

I'd rather trouble if I can help it.

I can transform for both of you once we're outside.

[She glances at him, apologetic.]
I didnt see you when Wen Qionglin and I did chocobo and horseback racing in the Enclosure. But- it's a large native bird from my world.
We use them for riding and transportation. Florian gave me a transformation bracelet for one for my birthday.
no subject
[this is where someone who knows about small talk might volunteer that Florian made him a transformation bracelet as well. Thrawn does not]
Do they fly?
no subject
no subject
They sound like prey animals. Do they have natural defenses apart from agility and dexterity?
no subject
Not really.
no subject
no subject
It can be hard to detect when I don't change my tone, right?
no subject
no subject
...Florian is sarcastic sometimes right? Is it obvious when he does it?
no subject
Not to me.
no subject
no subject
I don't want to confuse you Thrawn.

At least the Barge is good for exposure?
no subject
Exposure to situations I cannot possibly replicate in the future. Yes.
no subject
I think you have too little faith in the future, but that's neither here or there. Either way.
no subject
[People aren't crutches. And considering what he did to Eli...no. That disregard cannot happen again.]

I am an outlier. For the most part, that isn't true of others. But it's come up more than once.

And likely something agreed on across the Barge.
Though if Florian needs or wants blood, he has my permission.
Re: cw cannibalism mention
Re: cw cannibalism mention
You are both very accommodating, but I have made arrangements baring emergency so hopefully it will not come to it.
Re: cw cannibalism mention
So tempted.]
Is that right? Wonderful. So we don't have to fight over offering Florian blood!
Re: cw cannibalism mention
Re: cw cannibalism mention
Especially as a donation.
Re: cw cannibalism mention
Perhaps.
Re: cw cannibalism mention
Re: cw cannibalism mention
...now are you both... settled?
no subject
Yes. I'm okay.
Thank you for all your help, Florian.
no subject
Aerith, thank you for staying. You may leave.
[he means it in a way of "I asked you to stay before and you did, now I absolve you from that plea", but since it's Thrawn it comes off as commanding and arrogant]
no subject
So instead she nods and stands up.]
Thank you Noth for this talk.
Florian, Thrawn? I'll talk to you both later?
[And she'll scoot, letting them talk if they need to. And maybe Florian can have a nap.]
no subject
Certainly. Until next time.
beginning of Two-Step Flood
...something the matter?
Re: beginning of Two-Step Flood
No one is in danger. Merely...flood effects.
See for yourself.
[he turns his datapad on to the network, and tilts it to show Florian]
Re: beginning of Two-Step Flood
Ah.
[ A deeeeeeep sigh. ]
Let me get dressed. Thoughts on handling the situation as it stands?
Re: beginning of Two-Step Flood
I have cancelled my in-person appointments for the remainder of the flood and I have accurate amounts of stim shots and caf. I can accompany you to your tasks as needed.
If you prefer your privacy, I will wear blinders, or headphones if necessary.
Re: beginning of Two-Step Flood
I've no need for privacy from you in this respect. But I would like to know what you mean by 'accurate amounts of stim shots and caf' in regards to this situation. Given that staying awake at all hours to accomodate both your and my schedule isn't necessary.
Re: beginning of Two-Step Flood
The caf is in Wu Xin's cabin alongside his food replicator. I will need to go to him for those.
I did not think sitting around for the requisite three-to-six days, on average, this flood may last would beneficial when we share opposite schedules. Nor do I imagine you wish to be asleep while I cart you around the ship. We have at least one adversary here.
Re: beginning of Two-Step Flood
He isn't nearly enough of a problem for either of us to give him that title. But I don't discount his threat.
[ He waves that off. ]
And the obvious answer is to have my schedule changed. I intend to ask the Admiral to see if he will and, if not, I will see what magic I can work on myself. [ A glance over. ] Not to never rest, but to make my schedule diurnal for the time being.
Re: beginning of Two-Step Flood
[Thrawn tilts his head, curious]
You can do this without exhausting your magic stores or your mind? I was under the impression you were a very young vampire.
